Details
Mad Barn Optimum Probiotic is a five-strain probiotic powder for horses, made by Mad Barn Inc. of Petersburg, Ontario. This listing is the 60 g size. Guaranteed analysis on the label, per 1 g serving, "contains not less than": Lactobacillus fermentum 1 billion cfu; Lactobacillus acidophilus 1 billion cfu; Lactobacillus casei 1 billion cfu; Lactobacillus plantarum 1 billion cfu; Lactobacillus farciminis 1 billion cfu; total bacteria 20 billion cfu. Ingredients, as listed: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus farciminis, dextrose. Excipient ingredients: dextrose, calcium silicate. Directions for use, quoted from the label: "Administer with feed. Provide Daily." The body-weight table: under 200 kg, half a scoop (0.5 g); 200 to 500 kg, one scoop (1 g); over 500 kg, one and a half scoops (1.5 g). One scoop is 1.2 cc and holds 1 g. At the 1 g serving, the 60 g size is about 60 days of feeding. Shelf life on the label: 12 months from date of manufacture. Caution, quoted in full from the label: "This VHP may not be incorporated into a mixed feed. Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Keep tightly closed when not in use. Not for use in horses intended for food." VHP means a veterinary health product notified to Health Canada; the label says to give it with feed, not blend it into a mixed feed, and the storage line matters because these are live cultures. Mad Barn's disclaimer: "These statements have not been evaluated by Health Canada or the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease." Where to buy: Pipestone Farm Supply lists this product in Millet, Alberta (between Leduc and Wetaskiwin, south of Edmonton), with free in-store pickup and Canada-wide shipping. Set the feeding plan with an equine nutritionist or veterinarian, as the manufacturer directs. Mad Barn Optimum Probiotic is listed on this site in 60 g and 500 g; Mad Barn's gut-focused pellet, Visceral+, is listed separately. - Source: Mad Barn Inc. product information for Optimum Probiotic (directions for use, guaranteed analysis, caution, shelf life), madbarn.ca, viewed September 2026.
