Details
Mad Barn Optimum Digestive Health is a pelleted feed premix for horses made by Mad Barn Inc. of Petersburg, Ontario, built on a probiotic and prebiotic blend with a fermentation-derived enzyme source. This is the 5 kg pack, about 62 of the manufacturer's 80 g servings. Active ingredients per 80 g serving, as the manufacturer lists them: Proprietary Gut Health Pak 23 g (a source of Saccharomyces cerevisiae 1026, mannan-oligosaccharides, dried yeast extracts, beta glucans, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus farciminis; 67 billion CFU), oat hulls 50 g, calcium carbonate 2.8 g and Aspergillus niger fermentation product (a source of digestive enzymes) 1 g. Excipient ingredients: distillers dried grains, peppermint, lecithin and flax oil. Directions for use, from the manufacturer: horses under 200 kg, 0.4 scoop (32 g); 200 to 500 kg, one scoop (80 g); over 500 kg, 1.2 scoops (96 g). One scoop holds 125 cc, which is 80 grams. Mad Barn asks that the feeding rate be set with a nutritionist according to the horse's condition and current diet, and its own disclaimer states that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Caution, quoted from the manufacturer: "Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Keep tightly closed when not in use." Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture. Where to buy: Pipestone Farm Supply lists Mad Barn Optimum Digestive Health 5 kg in Millet, Alberta (between Leduc and Wetaskiwin, south of Edmonton), with Canada-wide shipping and free in-store pickup. The same pellets are listed in 2.5 kg and 20 kg packs; the Mad Barn brand page lists the Optimum Probiotic and Psyllium products. Set the feeding plan with an equine nutritionist or veterinarian, as the manufacturer directs. - Source: Mad Barn Inc. product information for Optimum Digestive Health (madbarn.ca/product/optimum-digestive-health), madbarn.ca, viewed September 2026.
