Catching a single ewe out of a group is where handling either goes well or turns into a rodeo. Chasing scatters the flock and winds up the animal you are after, whereas a crook lets you reach in, make contact and bring the animal to you before anything gets excited. At 90 cm this is the short pattern, which is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. A long crook is the tool for open ground; a short one is what you actually want inside a pen, a race or a lambing shed, where there is no room to swing a full-length staff and the animal is only ever a step or two away. Plastic construction keeps the weight down, so it can be worked one-handed while the other hand stays free for the gate or the animal. Hook first, then close the distance and take hold with your hands. The crook is for making contact, not for holding an animal out at a distance. Keep it hung on the pen rail where it is always within reach, because a crook that lives in the truck is a crook that never gets used. Rinse it off if it has been in anything unpleasant, and check the hook for cracks at the start of lambing rather than in the middle of it.
