A ewe spoon is a simple moulded plastic retainer with straps, used on a bred ewe that has prolapsed before lambing. The spoon sits against the vulva and the straps tie back into the wool over the hips so it stays put while the ewe eats, gets up and lies down. The plain shape is what makes it work. There are no moving parts, it comes apart for cleaning, and it stays clear of the ewe's normal function. Straps rather than a rigid frame mean you can adjust it on the animal and take it off quickly when she goes into labour, which is the part that matters at two in the morning in a cold lambing barn. Anyone lambing a decent-sized flock through a Prairie February should have one or two of these in the kit before the first ewe needs one. You will not want to be driving to town for it. Talk to your vet about the ewe herself and about how long to leave it on. This is the mechanical half of the job. Wash it, disinfect it and hang it back in the lambing kit when you are done with it.
