A gambrel restrainer is a shaped bar that slips over a sheep's hocks and holds the hind legs apart and forward. With the legs spread the animal cannot get its feet back under itself, so it sits quietly on its rump and you get both hands free. This is the small size at 19.5 by 11 cm, roughly 7 3/4 inches by 4 1/4 inches, which suits lambs, yearlings and smaller-framed ewes. Sizing matters more than people expect. Too big and it slips off the hocks the first time the animal moves; too small and it pinches and the sheep fights it the whole time. If you run larger ewes or rams, the large size is the one to reach for. It is one of the cheapest ways to turn foot trimming, drenching, belly shearing or an udder check into a one-person job. Red is easy to spot in straw bedding and in the bottom of a five-gallon pail. There is nothing to break and nothing to service. Hang it on a nail by the handling pen and it will still be there in ten years.
