Long hair does not want a body brush. A dandy brush skates over the top of a tangle, and a comb takes a knot apart by removing hair, which is how tails end up thin at the dock after a winter. A brush with long springy bristles reaches the roots and works a tangle loose instead of tearing through it. The back is natural wood, shaped as a handled brush rather than a block. The bristles are set long and elastic so they flex around a knot rather than dragging it, and the tips are rounded, which stops the brush scratching the crest or the dock when it goes right down to the skin and gives it a bit of a massage action on the way through. Work from the bottom of the tail upward in sections, holding the hair above where you are brushing so any pull is taken by your hand rather than the roots. On a mane, do the underside as well as the top. Clear the collected hair out of the bristles as you go. Keep the wooden back out of standing water, wipe it clean rather than soaking it, and let it dry properly before it goes back into a closed box.
