Details
Lambing kit lives a hard life. It gets used at three in the morning, put down in the straw, and picked up again two nights later. Anything with a wooden handle or a rough surface never really comes clean, whereas a one-piece moulded tool has nowhere for material to lodge, which is the whole argument for it. This aid is moulded in a single piece of yellow plastic and is made to be sterilised, so it can go through boiling water or a disinfectant solution between ewes rather than being wiped on a coat sleeve. Yellow is a practical choice in a lambing pen, where anything neutral coloured disappears into the bedding within a minute of being set down. Keep it with the rest of the kit in a lidded box rather than loose in a bucket, and clean it as soon as a job is finished rather than at the end of the night. How and when to intervene during lambing is a matter for proper training and for your veterinarian, and owning the tool is no substitute for either.
