A poultice or a dressing on a horse foot is only as good as whatever holds it there. Bandage alone slips off the heel bulbs, and tape over a wet hoof lasts about as long as it takes the horse to walk to the gate. Tar bandage is what stable hands and farriers have reached for over generations, for the plain reason that it holds when it is wet. The roll is 4.5 cm wide and 25 m long, in black. The tar backing does the work: it is tacky enough to bond to itself under tension and it resists water, so a wrap that goes on in the barn is still there after a night in a wet paddock. It cuts easily and needs no soaking or setting, so it goes straight over the top of the dressing. The usual sequence is dressing, then a soft padding layer, then this over the top, taking the wrap around the hoof wall and up onto the pastern only as far as it needs to go. Keep tension even, and do not build it up thicker than necessary across the sole, where it will only wear through. Keep the roll cool, because tar softens in heat and a warm roll bonds to itself.
