Anything strapped to a foot has to survive being walked on, standing in slurry and going through a footbath. Ordinary cloth tape gives up inside an hour. Tar bandage is the traditional answer in cattle work, because the tar backing is water-resistant and tacky enough to bond to itself once it has been pulled tight, and it stays wrapped when it gets wet. The roll is 45 mm wide and 25 m long, in black. It is a self-adhesive tape rather than a cast material, so there is no soaking and no setting time, and it can be cut with a knife or torn against itself. A 25 m roll covers a run of feet rather than one, which matters when a footbathing session turns up more animals than expected. Get the dressing seated first, start the tape above the area so it anchors on itself, and keep the tension even rather than pulling hard on a single turn. The tar wants to grab, so unroll a working length before you start rather than fighting the roll against the foot. Store it in its foil somewhere cool, since heat softens the tar and a warm roll bonds to itself.
