Weighing anything heavy usually means finding a platform scale, and by the time the load is on a pallet and moved across the yard the question has stopped being worth answering. A hanging scale takes the reading where the load already is, off a beam, a loader tine or a gambrel. This is the top of the mechanical dial range, reading to 100 kg with the face marked in 500 g steps. The body is metal, the dial sits behind a plexiglass front so the needle stays readable in a dusty barn, and it hangs and loads on metal hooks. Nothing about it needs a battery or a start-up routine, which matters for a tool that lives on a nail in the shop and gets picked up twice a year. The 500 g graduation is the thing to weigh against the smaller models. At this capacity you are reading bale weights, feed drums, full sacks and carcass work, where half a kilogram either way is noise. If you need finer resolution on lighter loads, the 25 kg and 50 kg versions of the same scale read in 100 g and 200 g steps. Hang it from something solid and let the load settle before reading, since a swinging load bounces the needle. Keep the face clean and dry, and store it hanging rather than lying under other tools, so the hook and spring are not carrying a side load between jobs.
