Details
Hand shears with a double bow spring, 31 cm long, a little over 12 inches. Kerbl lists its 31 cm sheep shear with a 16 cm blade and quality-ground edges. Hand shears are for the smaller jobs. Crutching a ewe before she lambs, dagging a dirty back end, opening up an udder so a lamb can find the teat, trimming around a wound, tidying up a show animal. All of that is faster with shears than with a machine you have to go get, plug in and clean afterward. They also work when the power does not, which in rural Alberta in the middle of winter is not a rare event. Keep them sharp, because dull shears pull wool instead of cutting it and that is hard on the sheep and hard on your hand. Wipe them dry after use, put a drop of oil on the pivot, and store them somewhere they will not get knocked around in a drawer.
