Veterinary cotton wool, 14 cm wide, in a 250 g roll, which is about half a pound. It is plain absorbent cotton sold in a width and a quantity that suit large-animal work rather than the little packs you get at the pharmacy. Cotton wool is the general-purpose consumable in any farm medicine box. Cleaning around a wound, swabbing an injection site, drying a teat, wiping a newborn calf's face, or laying in as a padding layer under a bandage. You use more of it than you plan to, which is why a 250 g roll makes far more sense than buying small and running out halfway through. Keep it in a closed container. An open roll sitting on a barn shelf picks up dust, chaff and whatever else is floating around in there, and the entire point of cotton is that it is clean when you reach for it. Tear off what you need and put the rest back. Along with gauze, padding, scissors and tape, this is one of the four or five things that ought to be stocked before calving starts rather than after.
