Details

A nylon ram harness with buckle closures. It straps around the ram's chest and shoulders and carries a marking crayon on the brisket, so every ewe he serves ends up with a coloured mark on her rump. Marking is how you turn a breeding season into information. Change the crayon colour every sixteen or seventeen days and you know which ewes bred on which cycle, which means you know roughly when each one is due and you can group them accordingly for lambing instead of guessing. It also tells you in a hurry if a ram is not getting the job done. A harness with no marks on any ewes after the first week is the cheapest breeding soundness check there is. Nylon webbing with buckles is the practical build for it. It adjusts to different rams, it does not rot the way leather does in a wet fall, and buckles hold where snap clips let go once a ram starts rubbing on a fence. Check the fit after the first day or two, then check it again as he loses condition through the season. Wash the wool grease off before you put it away.
