A roll of bandage padding, 10 cm wide by 5 m long, about 4 inches by 16 feet. It is the soft layer that goes on before the gauze and the outer wrap. Padding does two jobs at once. It absorbs, which keeps a dressing from soaking through as quickly, and it cushions, which spreads the pressure of the outer bandage so you do not create a pressure sore or choke off circulation at the edges. A bandage pulled on over gauze with no padding underneath is a bandage that causes its own problems, and that goes double on a leg where the tendons sit close under the skin. This is basic first-aid stock for anyone running cattle or horses. Wire cuts, a kick, a foot that needs poulticing. None of it happens at a convenient time or within easy reach of town. Keep a roll or two with your gauze and your bandage scissors in a closed box so it stays clean and dry. Padding that has sat open on a dusty shelf all summer is not what you want against an open wound.
