A barn is a dim place, you are usually wearing gloves, and half the people reading a thermometer in the middle of the night do not have their reading glasses on them. A display you can make out at arm's length in poor light means fewer second attempts and less time holding an animal that would rather not be held. Temperature is the first honest number you get on a sick animal. It tells you whether a dull calf is fighting something or is just cold and hungry, and it gives your vet something concrete to work with when you phone. Keep it in the calving kit or the medicine box, clean it between animals, and check the battery at the start of every calving season rather than finding out it is flat at three in the morning. Bring it inside in winter too. Batteries lose their punch when they get cold.
