Details
The medium Muller weaner is the size for average-framed calves. These are the ones you are weaning at a normal weight off summer pasture, rather than the big backgrounded yearlings the large size is built for. It seats on the nasal cartilage and the flap hangs down over the muzzle. The calf can still eat, drink and travel with the herd, but it cannot latch on. A screw adjustment and the elastic body let you snug it to the individual nose. Get the size right: a medium rattling around in a big yearling will come out in the first willow patch, and a medium forced into a small calf is not comfortable for anyone involved. The practical payoff is a calf that is already off milk by the time you finally split the pairs. Less bawling through the corral fence, less walking, and a calf that goes onto feed sooner. That is the difference between a set of calves that keeps gaining through November and a set that stalls out for two weeks. Wash them and box them when you are through and they will do several seasons.
