Details
A plastic anti-suckling weaner that fits into the animal's nose and rests against the nasal cartilage. The calf can graze, drink and eat hay normally, but the flap prevents it from getting onto a teat. This is the large size, meant for bigger calves and yearlings. Elastic in the body plus an adjustment screw means you can set the fit to the individual animal instead of hoping one shape covers everything. A properly set weaner stays put, does not chafe, and does not end up lying in the bush somewhere. Fit is the whole game with these. A loose one gets lost and a tight one causes trouble. Two-stage weaning is easier on everybody. The pair stays together through the noisy part, the calf quits nursing, and when you finally separate them you get far less fenceline walking, less bawling and less shrink. On a western Canadian outfit where the pairs come home off pasture in October and every pound counts going into winter, that is real money. Pull them once weaning is done and box them for next fall.
