Details

A 3 litre calf bottle, roughly three quarts, with a snap-on nipple and a moulded handle. Three litres is a full feed for a newborn beef calf, so you fill it once instead of topping up partway through with cold hands. The snap fitting is the useful part. It seats fast, comes off fast for washing, and there is no fine thread to cross or to pack solid with dried colostrum. When you are trying to get a chilled calf a feed inside the first few hours, fumbling with a nipple in a dark barn is the last thing you need. The handle changes how you hold it. You can brace the bottle against your leg and use your free hand on the calf's head instead of hugging a slick bottle against your chest and hoping. In a Prairie calving barn a bottle lives a hard life. It gets dropped, frozen, stepped on and scalded. Rinse it right after every feed, run hot water and a bottle brush through it, and store it upside down so it drains properly.
