The Buddex is a cordless dehorner for young calves. The 18 mm tip, about 11/16 of an inch, heats to roughly 700 C, near 1,300 F, in about four seconds, and the built-in battery will do up to 40 calves on a single charge. It weighs 800 g, close to a pound and three quarters, and is 19.5 cm long, so it handles comfortably in one hand. Cordless is the whole argument for it. There is no extension cord to run out to a calf shed, no gas cartridge to keep from freezing, and nothing trailing behind you when a calf decides to move. The focal ring around the tip sets the working depth and keeps the burn where it belongs, on the ring around the horn bud. For a February calving operation in central Alberta, four seconds to heat is not a small thing. You are working in a cold barn, often by yourself, and anything that shortens the time an animal spends held is worth having. Charge it the night before you plan to work calves, do the job while the buds are still small, and keep the tip clean between animals. Replacement tips are available.
