Details
The large gambrel measures 26 by 16.5 cm, about 10 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches, and is built to fit over the hocks of mature ewes and rams. Slipped on, it holds the hind legs spread and forward so the animal settles onto its rump instead of scrambling. Big ewes are the ones that hurt you. A two hundred pound ewe that gets a hind foot planted can throw you into a panel, and a mature ram is worse again. The wider spread on this size accounts for a heavier hock and a thicker leg, so it seats properly instead of riding off. If your flock runs small or you are mostly working lambs, buy the small size instead. An oversized gambrel is a loose gambrel and a loose gambrel is no help at all. Yellow shows up in straw and against dirty wool, which is the practical reason for the colour. Use it for foot trimming, crutching, drenching, or anything else where you need both hands and no help. No moving parts, nothing to grease, easy to hose off and hang back up.
