Every wire joint leaves a tail. Left loose, that tail is a snag point that catches a blanket, a coverall sleeve or a hide, and it is the sort of small detail that separates a fence somebody built properly from one that was simply made to hold. The twister secures the tail or tag wire back against the run so nothing stands out. Gripple lists it as suitable for both mild steel and high tensile wire, so it works whether you are patching an old barbed line or finishing off a new high tensile fence. It is a small item and it costs next to nothing, but it is the kind of thing that only exists because somebody who builds fence for a living got tired of the alternatives. Those alternatives are wrapping the tail by hand, which never quite stays put, or cutting it flush, which leaves a sharp end pointing straight out at whatever walks past. Buy a handful at a time. They are easy to drop in tall grass, and you will get through more of them on a long run than you expect to.
