A broken barbed wire is a fifteen minute job with a knot and a pair of pliers, and it is a job you do with cold hands, usually in a ditch, usually on the worst morning of the week. A Gripple joiner turns it into seconds. Push one wire end into one side and the other end into the other, the internal rollers grip, and then you tension it. This joiner is built for mild steel barbed wire sized 2 x 2.0 to 2.5 mm, which is 2 x 14 to 12.5 swg. It runs a high-grade ceramic roller for corrosion resistance, and that matters on a fence line living outdoors year round through wet snow, spring runoff and everything in between. They come twenty to a bag, which is about the right number to keep behind the seat of the truck. Use the correct joiner for the wire you actually have; the sizing range is not a suggestion, and a joiner working outside its range is not a joint you want holding a fence. Tension with a Gripple tensioning tool rather than by hand so the load is consistent, and use the setting and release key if you need to reposition a joiner before it is loaded.
