Udder balm is a working product rather than a treatment. Teat and udder skin takes a beating from cold, wind, wet bedding and the mechanical work of milking, and skin that has gone dry and cracked hurts, which makes a cow harder to milk and more likely to kick. A balm keeps that skin supple. Four hundred grams is a practical tub size for a small dairy or a few family cows. It goes on after milking so the skin has time to take it up, and a thin worked-in layer does more than a thick smear that picks up bedding. Where people get it wrong is expecting it to be medicine. This softens and protects skin. It does not treat mastitis, it will not clear up an infected teat lesion, and it is not a teat dip or a disinfectant. If you need teat disinfection, use a registered dip. If a quarter is hot, hard, or the milk has changed, that is a mastitis conversation with your veterinarian, and a balm on the outside will not touch it. Scoop with clean hands. A big open tub in a milk house picks up whatever is in the air and on people's fingers, and once it is contaminated you are spreading that around every udder you touch. Follow the label for species and use, and keep it from freezing.
