Dehorning paste is a caustic that destroys the horn-producing cells at the bud. It works only in a narrow window, on calves young enough that the bud has not yet attached to the skull, and the window is measured in days rather than weeks. Applied to an older calf it causes a burn without preventing a horn. The squeeze bottle matters. It lets you put a small controlled amount exactly on the bud without dipping fingers or a stick in a jar, and controlling where the paste goes is the entire safety story with this product. Use it properly or use something else. Canada's Codes of Practice call for pain control for disbudding and dehorning, so talk to your veterinarian about what to give and get it into your protocol. Apply only to a dry bud, use the smallest amount that covers it, and keep the calf out of rain and away from other calves and from the cow afterward, because paste that runs or gets licked burns eyes, muzzles, udders and whatever else it reaches. Wear gloves and keep it well away from your own eyes. Store it capped, upright, dry and where children and animals cannot reach it. Follow the label for species, age and directions. If the calves are already past bud stage, stop and talk to your vet about a different method.
