Scouring calves do not usually die of the infection. They die of dehydration and the acid-base upset that goes with it, and oral electrolytes are how you get ahead of that. This is a single-dose sachet, which means no measuring out of a pail and no guessing, and the high-energy formulation is there because a scouring calf is burning through reserves while it is off feed. Mix it as the label directs and give it as a separate feeding, not stirred into milk unless the label specifically says you can. Diluting milk with electrolyte tends to interfere with clotting in the stomach and can prolong the scour. The part people get wrong is stopping milk. Calves need the calories, and modern advice is to keep milk or milk replacer going alongside electrolytes rather than pulling it. Space the feedings a couple of hours apart. The other part people get wrong is waiting. Electrolytes work in a calf that is standing and still has a suck reflex. A calf that is down, cold in the mouth, has sunken eyes or will not swallow needs intravenous fluids from your veterinarian, and no amount of oral product will fix it. Mix fresh each time and follow the label for rate and frequency.
