Styptic powder is the answer to the small bleed that will not quit on its own: a dehorning site, a castration, a clipped dew claw, a torn nail, a nick from the shears. You pack the powder onto the site with pressure and it helps the blood clot rather than continuing to seep. The reason to keep it on the shelf is that a bleed which looks alarming is often not dangerous, but it is still a mess and still a fly attractant and still something you would rather stop. Two hundred millilitres in a shaker top is enough to last most places a very long time, because a job only takes a pinch. What it is not is a substitute for pressure. Powder plus firm pressure held for a minute or two works. Powder sprinkled on and walked away from usually does not. Keep the container dry and closed, because damp powder cakes and will not shake out when you are in a hurry. Use it on clean minor wounds, not packed into a deep or contaminated one. Follow the label for species and directions. Arterial bleeding, a wound that soaks through a pressure wrap, or an animal that is going weak or pale is not a job for powder.
