This is loose salt carrying a much higher level of iodine than ordinary iodized stock salt. Iodine matters because the thyroid runs on it, and thyroid function drives metabolism, growth and reproduction. Much of the Prairies is not naturally rich in it, and certain feeds make the shortfall worse. Four hundred grams is a small pack. That makes it useful for a few head, a small flock, or trying it before committing, and impractical as a herd program. If iodine is a real gap in your feeding, the ten kilogram size and a proper mineral program are the way to handle it. The caution is the same one that applies to any concentrated single mineral: more is not better. Iodine has a defined tolerance and excess causes real problems, and most operations are already feeding a fortified mineral that contains some. Add up total intake from all sources before adding this on top, and feed it at the label rate rather than free-choice alongside another salt source, or animals will self-select unpredictably. Follow the label for species and feeding rate. If you think you have a deficiency rather than just a thin ration, have your veterinarian or nutritionist look at the feed test and the water before you treat, because guessing at minerals is how animals end up with two problems instead of one.
