This is the same iodide-fortified stock salt as the small container, in a 10 kg pail sized for an operation that keeps salt in front of stock year-round instead of buying a bag at a time. Iodine is one of the trace minerals most likely to come up short on prairie feed, and a deficiency shows up as goitre in newborns, poor conception and rough hair long before anybody thinks to test for it. Feed it free-choice in a covered mineral feeder or a tub that drains. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls water out of the air and out of any rain that reaches it — so an uncovered feeder turns a pail of loose salt into a brick and a puddle of brine in a couple of weeks. Keep the lid on the pail between fills and store it off a concrete floor. The important caution with any fortified salt is to add up what your animals are already getting. If you are also feeding a commercial trace mineral, a mineral tub or a medicated premix, iodine is very likely in those too, and stacking products is the usual way operations end up over-supplementing. Read the guaranteed analysis on everything in front of the animals and talk to your nutritionist or veterinarian before running two iodine sources at once. Consumption varies a lot with the class of stock, the water and how much sodium is in the base ration, so watch how fast the feeder empties for the first few weeks rather than assuming a book figure.
