DVL Propylene glycol 4L
4 L of propylene glycol, the standard energy drench for fresh cows slipping into ketosis after calving.
Details
A fresh cow is in negative energy balance whether you like it or not: she is producing milk before her intake catches up, and she makes up the difference out of body fat. Ketosis is what happens when that process outruns her liver's ability to handle it. Propylene glycol is the standard oral energy source used to interrupt that, because it converts to glucose rather than adding to the fat load. Four litres is a working quantity. It gets used a dose at a time on individual cows, typically over consecutive days rather than once, and running out partway through is worse than not starting. The important context is that a drench treats the cow in front of you and does nothing about the herd. If you are treating multiple fresh cows, the problem is in transition management: body condition at dry-off, dry cow ration, feed bunk access, and how quickly intake comes up after calving. That conversation is worth having with your veterinarian and your nutritionist. Also worth knowing: a ketotic cow often has something else going on, such as a displaced stomach, metritis or a sore foot keeping her from the bunk. A cow that does not respond needs examining, not more drench. Follow the label for species, dose, frequency and any milk withdrawal.
