DVL Mineral Oil - 4L
4 L of mineral oil, the traditional lubricant laxative for impaction, given only by stomach tube.
Details
Mineral oil is not absorbed and not digested. It coats and lubricates, which is why it has been used for generations for impactions in horses and for gut work in cattle, and why it comes in a jug this size rather than a bottle. The single most important thing about it is how it goes in. Mineral oil has almost no taste and does not trigger a swallow reflex, so an animal drenched from a bottle can inhale it without objecting. Oil in the lungs causes a pneumonia that is very often fatal and cannot be treated out. It should go through a properly placed stomach or nasogastric tube, placement confirmed, every time. If you are not confident placing and confirming a tube, this is a veterinary job, and that is not a formality. The second thing is what an impaction means. A horse showing colic signs needs a veterinary examination, because the difference between an impaction that will pass with oil and fluids and a surgical lesion is not something you can tell from the outside, and the delay costs the horse. Follow the label for species, dose and route. Store the jug capped and clean, keep a dedicated funnel and pump for it, and do not use the same equipment for anything you drench by mouth.
