Nobody plans for the calf whose mother dies at two in the morning. A 227 gram pack is the answer to that: enough to get something into an orphan right now, without opening a twenty kilogram bag you will never finish if it turns out to be a one-off. Keep two or three in the calving kit. They store, they cost very little, and the alternative is a middle-of-the-night trip to town or feeding something inappropriate because it is what was in the fridge. Mix it exactly as the label directs, at the temperature the label specifies. Milk replacer mixed too concentrated causes scours and mixed too thin starves a calf slowly, and both mistakes are easy to make when you are guessing in a hurry. Mix fresh for each feeding and feed it warm. The one thing replacer cannot do is replace colostrum. A newborn needs colostrum within the first few hours, and after roughly twenty-four hours the gut can no longer absorb the antibodies at all. If the calf has not had colostrum, that is the emergency, not the milk, and you need colostrum or a replacement product immediately. For an ongoing orphan, buy a full bag of a proper replacer and get onto a routine. Follow the label for species, mixing and feeding rate.
