Lanolin is wool grease, and it has been used on chapped skin for as long as people have kept sheep, because it holds moisture in and stays put. This is a plain, heavy, 400 gram tub of it, and it does exactly one thing well: it softens and protects skin that has cracked from cold, wind, wet and repeated milking. Where it earns its place is the January udder and teat that has gone rough and sore, the chapped teat ends on a fresh cow, and the hands of whoever is doing the milking. It works because it does not wash off immediately and does not sting on application. Be clear about what it is not. This is an emollient, not a medication. It softens and protects; it does not treat mastitis, it does not treat a bacterial or fungal skin infection, and slathering it over a genuinely infected teat end just makes the problem harder to see. Cracked skin that is hot, swollen, weeping or getting worse needs a proper look and your veterinarian. Work it in with clean hands on clean skin. Scoop with a clean hand or a spatula rather than digging into the tub with something dirty, since a tub this size lasts a long time and gets contaminated easily. Follow the label for species and use, and keep it somewhere it will not freeze solid.
