Thrush lives in the deep clefts of the frog, and it thrives in exactly the conditions horses spend the winter in: wet bedding, mud, packed feet that never dry out. This is a copper-based hoof product for treating those areas, and the size makes it practical to keep treating daily for the couple of weeks it usually takes. Ninety per cent of the outcome is management, and it is worth being blunt about that. Pick the feet out properly every day, get the horse onto dry footing, clean the stall, and the product has something to work with. Applied into a foot that goes straight back into wet muck, it is a losing battle. Get the clefts genuinely clean and as dry as you can before applying, then work the product down into the cleft rather than painting the surface. Follow the label for directions and frequency. Copper products stain. Expect green on hands, clothes, brushes and the bottom of the foot, and use gloves and an applicator you do not care about. If the foot is lame, hot, swollen, smells markedly worse than a normal thrush, or the frog is disintegrating, that is a farrier and veterinarian conversation. Deep infection, a puncture or an abscess all look like thrush at a glance and none of them are treated with a topical.
