Ten kilograms is a program size, not a first-aid size. It is what you buy when supporting water intake through stress is something you do every time animals get shipped, weaned, processed or hit with heat, and when the numbers you are treating make the 300 g package an expensive way to do it. The logic behind water-soluble supplements is simple: stressed animals go off feed before they go off water, so the water line is the most reliable route into them. Poultry barns and backgrounding pens are where this gets used hardest. Buying in bulk brings two responsibilities. Keep the pail sealed and dry, because soluble powder that has taken up moisture cakes into a brick and will not dissolve. And be disciplined about mixing rate, since it is easier to guess when you are scooping out of a large pail than when you are tipping in a sachet. Mix only what will be drunk in a day, then dump and scrub the trough or flush the lines. Treated water grows biofilm faster than plain water, and dirty water undoes the point of the exercise. Follow the label for species, rate and duration. This supports hydration through stress; it does not treat disease. Ask your veterinarian before combining it with anything else in the water.
