Pyrantel is a tetrahydropyrimidine, which is a mouthful but the practical point is simple: it is not an ivermectin and not a benzimidazole. It paralyses worms so they are passed, and it covers large and small strongyles, pinworms, and roundworms. On many farms ascarid resistance to ivermectin has made pyrantel the more dependable choice in weanlings and yearlings, where a heavy roundworm burden is a real risk. Because it works by a different mechanism, it is a legitimate rotation partner rather than just a different label on the same active. If you have used nothing but mectins for years, this is a genuine change of class. It has no activity against bots, so it does not replace a fall ivermectin or moxidectin dose in a full-year program. Dose to actual weight from the label. Pyrantel has a wide safety margin, which is part of why it has stayed useful in young stock, but underdosing still selects for survivors and a heavy ascarid kill in a small foal can cause an impaction — worth discussing with your veterinarian before you treat a foal you suspect is carrying a lot. As with any dewormer, the useful question is not which brand but whether it worked. A fecal egg count before treating and again about two weeks after will tell you what your own parasites are doing, which no general recommendation can. Store the syringe capped, above freezing, and out of reach of children and pets.
