Chlorhexidine is the antiseptic most large-animal veterinarians reach for, and 2% is the working concentration for general use. It kills a broad range of bacteria, keeps working for a while after it dries, and unlike iodine it holds up reasonably well in the presence of organic material — which matters when nothing on a farm is ever truly clean before you start. It is what surgical scrubs, teat dips, navel dips, and wound flushes have been built around for years. The 3.8 L jug is the size that makes sense if you are actually using it: mixing wash water, filling a foot bath, charging a dip cup, or diluting for wound irrigation. Check the label for the dilution appropriate to your use — full strength is not always what you want, and over-strong chlorhexidine on an open wound can be harder on healing tissue than it is on bacteria. Two cautions worth knowing. Chlorhexidine is genuinely damaging to the eye and to the middle ear, so it does not belong in an eye flush or down an ear canal — use a product intended for that. And it is inactivated by soaps and hard water, so rinsing before you scrub and mixing with clean water makes a real difference to whether it does anything. Keep the jug capped and out of sunlight, mix only what you will use, and label any spray bottle you decant into. Nothing here replaces a veterinarian's judgment on a wound that is deep, dirty, near a joint, or not healing.
