Moxidectin belongs to the same broad family as ivermectin but behaves differently in the horse. It persists longer, which stretches the interval before eggs reappear in manure, and at label dose it has meaningful activity against the encysted stages of small strongyles that sit dormant in the gut wall. Those encysted larvae are the ones that cause trouble when they all emerge at once, and most other single-dose products leave them untouched. That persistence is a genuine advantage and also a reason to use the product deliberately rather than routinely. Longer egg reappearance means fewer treatments per year for the horses that need it, but it also means moxidectin is worth reserving for a purpose instead of burning it as your default tube. Every dose of any dewormer selects for the worms that survived it. Weight accuracy matters more here than with most products. Moxidectin has a narrower safety margin in very young foals and in thin, debilitated, or sick horses, and the label sets a minimum age for a reason. Do not treat outside what the label allows, do not guess weight upward "to be safe," and talk to your veterinarian before using it on a horse in poor condition or one carrying a heavy visible burden — a large larval kill in a compromised horse is its own problem. Set the ring, deliver over the tongue, hold the head up a moment. Store out of frost, away from children, and keep it away from dogs.
