Plastic snap traps are the sensible first choice for mice anywhere poison does not belong: a house, a kitchen, a tack room, a shop with a dog in it, or a feed room where you cannot risk bait near feed. They kill instantly when they are set right, there is no anticoagulant in the building, and you know exactly what you caught and where — information a bait station never gives you. The plastic design is easier and safer to set than the old wood-and-wire style, easier to trip one-handed, and you can empty and reuse it without touching the mouse. They also wash, which the wooden ones never really did. Placement is nearly everything. Mice run along walls and behind objects, not across open floor. Set the trap tight against a wall with the trigger end toward the wall, in a corner, behind the fridge, under a shelf — wherever the droppings are. Two traps set properly outperform ten set in the middle of the room. Bait light and bait sticky. A smear of peanut butter works better than a lump of cheese, because a mouse has to work at it rather than carrying it off. Some people set traps unset for a day or two so mice stop being suspicious of a new object, which is worth doing if you have a wary population. Check them at least daily. A trap that only injures an animal is the worst outcome, and it is usually the result of a dull, dirty or badly set trap. Keep them out of reach of children and pets — a snap trap will hurt a curious dog's nose.
