Details
Item DT9859 is a 5 quart waterer moulded in durable translucent plastic. The translucent body is the useful part: you can see the level without lifting it, so a quick look through the door tells you whether the pen needs topping up. Five quarts suits a brooder pen or a small growing flock. It is light enough to carry full in one hand, which matters if the coop is a walk from the tap, and small enough that dumping and refilling it daily is no hardship. Fresh water every day beats a big fount that sits three days and grows a slime ring. Plastic will not rust through the seam the way an old galvanized fount does, and it rinses clean without much scrubbing. Keep it out of direct sun where you can, because algae shows up quickly in a clear container on a warm afternoon. In cold weather this freezes solid like any open waterer, so plan on a heated base or a swap-and-thaw routine rather than chipping at it. Knock ice out with it on its side rather than banging the base on concrete.
