The 5 lb Double-Tuf feeder (item DT9855) steps up from the chick sizes to something that will hold a growing or laying flock for a day or better. Jar and feed saver ring are moulded as one piece in impact-resistant plastic, and a lid and carry handle are included. Five pounds is the size most backyard flocks settle on. Six to ten birds will work through it over a day or two depending on what else they are getting, which means you are not walking out at dusk to a feeder that has been empty since noon. The saver ring cuts the billing habit that scatters crumble into the litter, and because nothing in it is steel there is no rusted seam leaking feed out the bottom two years from now. Set it on a block or hang it so the lip sits about at back height for the flock. That alone stops most of the waste and keeps litter out of the feed. Wash and dry it before it goes into storage, since leftover feed dust in a shed draws mice all winter.
