Item DT9862 holds 2.5 gallons in a moulded translucent body, so you read the water level from across the pen instead of tipping it to find out. The screw-on design fills and reassembles quickly with wet hands and mitts on. Two and a half gallons is a real flock waterer. A dozen laying hens in July will pull it down noticeably by evening, and having that much in reserve means one trip out rather than three. Plastic also does not taint water the way a rusting galvanized fount eventually does, and it will not stain your hands orange every time you carry it. Understand what winter does to any open waterer. Below freezing this will ice up like anything else, so it belongs on a heated base or gets swapped for a fresh one at chore time. When you do knock ice out, lay it on its side and work the block loose rather than driving a boot into the base. Rinse it out regularly through summer too, because algae builds fast in a translucent container sitting in the sun.
