The Double-Tuf 1.5 lb feeder (item DT9854) is moulded as one piece, jar and feed saver ring together, from impact-resistant plastic that will not rust or corrode. A plastic lid and a carry handle come with it. The feed saver ring is the part that earns its keep. Chicks bill feed sideways out of an open trough, and once crumble hits damp shavings it is gone, or worse, it moulds. The ring narrows the opening so birds eat rather than shovel. Because there is no galvanized metal in it, there is nothing to rust out where wet feed sits, which is what usually kills a cheap chick feeder by the second batch. At 1.5 lb this is a brooder feeder, not a coop feeder. Figure on filling it morning and night for a dozen chicks rather than putting out more than they will clean up in a day. The lid keeps shavings, droppings and curious feet out of the feed. It comes apart and washes in a pail of warm soapy water between batches, which matters more than most people think when you are brooding chicks back to back.
