Coburn vinyl zipper bag calf feeder 2.5l/2qt
An esophageal tube feeder with a 2.5 litre zippered vinyl bag, used to get colostrum or fluids into a calf that will not suck.
Details
A newborn that will not suck is a race against the clock. Colostrum absorption falls away fast in the first hours, and a scoured calf losing fluid does not have time to be coaxed onto a bottle. A tube feeder puts a measured volume where it needs to go on the first attempt. The bag holds 2.5 litres and zips open along the top, so it fills easily from a jug and washes out properly afterward, which a narrow-necked bottle never really does. The tube runs 48 inches, with the last 16 inches stiffened so it feeds down the throat under control instead of folding back on itself. The probe end carries a tear-shaped ball, and that ball is the part that keeps the tube out of the trachea and in the esophagus where it belongs. Warm the fluid, hold or hang the bag above the calf, and let gravity do the work rather than squeezing. Rinse the bag and flush the tube straight after use; milk residue left in a tube overnight in a warm barn is exactly the bacterial load you were trying to avoid. Anyone calving out cows through a Prairie spring should have one within reach.
