Nearly every decision you make about a horse gets easier with an honest weight. Wormers, sedatives and most other medications are dosed by body weight, and eyeballing a horse at a thousand pounds is how animals end up under-dosed and parasites end up resistant. Feed rates are the same story: a hay ration set as a percentage of body weight only works if you know the body weight. The tape is read around the heart girth, just behind the withers and elbow, with the horse standing square on level ground and not holding its breath. The printed scale converts that girth to an estimated weight in pounds. The height scale is used separately, run up from the ground beside the front leg to the top of the withers, which is how you settle whether something is a pony or a small horse. It is worth taping the same horse at the same time each month. Weight loss under a heavy winter coat is very hard to see and very easy to measure, and in an Alberta winter a horse quietly dropping condition is a problem you want to catch in November, not March.
