Chute scales are the right answer and not every outfit has one, especially on a rented quarter or at a corral you only use twice a year. A tape gives you a working weight anywhere you can get a hand around an animal, which in practice means anywhere you have a head gate or a squeeze. Read it around the heart girth, snug but not cinched, immediately behind the shoulder with the animal standing square. The scale is printed in pounds and kilograms, so the number goes straight onto a treatment sheet without conversion. It is scaled for beef conformation, which is what separates it from the dairy tapes. Where it earns its keep is processing day.
