Four one-pound bait bars. The reason to use a bar this size rather than a handful of small blocks is simple: under heavy rat pressure a 20 g block is gone by morning and the station is empty until you get back to it, whereas a 453 g bar keeps bait available continuously. On a yard where rats are established and you cannot service stations daily, that continuity is what actually brings a population down. Bars suit rats better than mice. Mice nibble and move on; rats will work steadily on a bar. This is an anticoagulant rodenticide, so read the label before you place anything. It sets out the registered sites, whether a tamper-resistant station is required, and how to place — and it is the legal instruction, not a guideline. A bar this size needs to go somewhere it cannot be dragged off or reached. Use a large locked station anchored down, and remember that a bait bar looks and smells like something a farm dog would be very interested in. Store the unopened bars sealed, locked and away from feed. Pick up dead rodents daily. Secondary poisoning of owls, hawks, foxes and barn cats happens through scavenged carcasses, and heavy baiting means more carcasses. If a dog or cat eats bait or a poisoned rodent, call your veterinarian immediately and take the label with you. Vitamin K1 is an effective treatment and works much better started before any bleeding shows. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
