A rat-sized plastic snap trap. Rats take considerably more force to kill cleanly than mice, which is why a mouse trap set for a rat is a welfare problem rather than a solution — this one is built with the spring strength and jaw size for the job. Rats are the reason to own traps rather than just bait. In a granary, a feed room, a horse barn or anywhere a dog works, a poison-free option matters. Traps also give you information: a caught rat tells you exactly where the runway is, which is worth more than a guess about where to put a station. Rats are cautious about new objects in a way mice are not, so pre-baiting is not optional with a wary population. Set the trap unset, baited, for two or three nights until the bait is being taken confidently, and then set it. Skipping that step is why people decide rat traps do not work. Placement is along walls, at burrow entrances, behind pallets, on beams and rafters, in the runways you can see as greasy rub marks. Set the trigger end against the wall. Bait with something they are already eating on the yard. Handle it carefully — a rat trap will break a finger and will badly injure a dog's nose or a cat's foot. Set it where pets and children cannot reach, or inside a trap box. Check daily without exception. Wear gloves when you clear it and wash afterward; rats carry disease worth respecting, and that applies to what you handle as much as to the rodent itself.
