Insects on a board tell you whether you have cockroaches, beetles, spiders or a stored-product pest, and where they are concentrated, which is exactly the information needed before choosing a treatment. Mouse activity on a board tells you which runways are live. Working this way — monitor first, treat second — is how professionals avoid spraying the wrong thing in the wrong place. The welfare caution matters if you use them to catch rather than to monitor. A mouse stuck on a board dies slowly of stress and dehydration, and animals injure themselves trying to pull free. Glue traps are restricted or banned in some jurisdictions because of it. Check boards at least twice daily and dispatch anything caught immediately, or use snap traps, which kill at once, or a multi-catch trap, which holds mice unharmed. Practical limits: dust, grease, moisture and cold all degrade the adhesive, so replace boards regularly in a working barn or shop rather than leaving them down for months and assuming they still work.
