Obstetrical lubricant in a concentrated dry form. You mix it with water to the consistency you want, which is the reason to buy it this way rather than in a jug: 283.5 g of powder makes a great deal of lubricant, it takes up almost no room in a calving kit, it does not freeze, and you can make it thin for a sleeve or thick for a hard pull. In a difficult calving, lubricant is not a comfort item — it is one of the things that determines the outcome. A dry uterus and a dry calf mean far more force is needed, and force is what tears tissue and kills cows and calves. Plenty of lubricant, pumped in properly ahead of the calf, is one of the few interventions that consistently makes a hard pull go better. Mix it with warm clean water. Make more than you think you need; running out halfway through is a genuine problem and mixing a fresh batch with cold hands in the dark is not a job you want. A pump makes it far easier to get lubricant where it needs to be rather than smearing it on the outside. Keep the container closed and dry, because powder that has taken up moisture sets into a lump that will not mix. Store it in the calving kit with a clean bucket and a pump so it is all in one place when you need it at three in the morning. If a calving is not progressing, call your veterinarian. Lubricant makes a correct pull safer; it does not make a malpresentation, a twisted uterus or a calf that is simply too big into something you should be pulling.
