A cut tree drops needles because it stops taking up water, and it stops taking up water because sap and air seal the cut end within hours. This is a preservative you add to the stand water to help the tree keep drinking, which is what keeps needles green and pliable and the tree less of a fire risk in a warm living room. The single most important thing is not in the bottle, though. Make a fresh cut across the trunk, taking a couple of centimetres off the base, immediately before you put the tree in the stand — and then never let the water level drop below the cut. A tree that runs dry for even a few hours re-seals and will not drink again no matter what you add to the water afterward. A fresh tree can take up a surprising amount in the first days, so check the reservoir daily. Mix at the rate on the label and top up as the tree drinks. It is not magic; a fresh, locally cut tree kept in water will hold up well on its own, and a tree that was cut in October and shipped will struggle regardless. But for a tree that will be up for three or four weeks in a heated house, a preservative is a reasonable few dollars. Keep the stand well away from heat registers, fireplaces and space heaters, use lights that run cool, and turn them off when nobody is home. When the tree stops drinking and needles pull away easily, it has become a fire hazard and it is time for it to go outside. Keep the bottle out of reach of children and pets, and rinse the stand before storing it.
